Banners 2017
Banners are used for signalising. They signalise directions, events, and identities…I can’t help but think of Game of Thrones. When only very few people could read, the best way to convey meaning was through symbols, colours, and shapes. They wer, and still are, a universal language.
Each of these five banners represents a letter from the alphabet in the maritime signalisation system. They have been altered by suppressing the colours, and adding circles. The choice of fabric is purposeful. Sewing is by tradition a craft mainly handled by women. I am not a textile specialist (far from it), so I did an artwork that is not about textiles but about a concept: these banners profess an identity. This installation, made of five successive banners, is a visual aphorism.
